Assemblymember Dababneh Joins with Community to Save the Balboa Magnet School’s Jewish Home Buddy Program
LOS ANGELES — Yesterday, Assemblymember Matt Dababneh (D-Woodland Hills) visited the Jewish Home for the Aging in Reseda and presented a donation to Angela Bronson, the third-grade teacher who runs Balboa Magnet School’s Jewish Home Buddy Program. This contribution will ensure the continued operation of the Buddy Program for this year.
For 21 years, Bronson has run the Buddy Program, which pairs her third-grade students with elderly residents at the Jewish Home for the Aging. Students get to meet and do art projects with the residents. Through these relationships, the students receive invaluable lessons in history, empathy, and respect. At the end of the school year, the students present their senior “buddies” with short books they have written about their respective buddy’s life. The Buddy Program was at risk of ending this year, since the foundation that supported it dissolved and could no longer support the program’s transportation and supply costs.
Assemblymember Dababneh said:
“After reading the August 28, 2017, Daily News article about the Jewish Home Buddy Program being in jeopardy without continued funding, I knew we had to act to save it. We were able to secure a very generous contribution from local business and community leader Sam Delug that will allow the program to continue for this year. Having been able to visit and see the Buddy Program firsthand, I can attest to how much value and joy this program brings to these students and seniors, and I am proud to have been able to play a role in keeping it running.”
“This program is important to all of us,” said Naomi, a resident at the Jewish Home for the Aging. “It is a wonderful association and these children are marvelous.” Kiwa, a student in the program, said, “The program is amazing because I don’t actually get to meet a lot of seniors.”
Those interested in donating can send a check written out to the Balboa Magnet School and send it to 17020 Labrador St., Northridge, Calif., 91325. Note on your check or in an attached letter that the donation is for the “Jewish Home program.”
