Sacramento, CA — In an effort to bring the 2026 FIFA World Cup to California, today state lawmakers announced new legislation that would strengthen host city bids by Los Angeles and San Francisco. The appropriately-numbered Assembly Bill (AB) 2026, authored by Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel (D-San Fernando Valley), would enhance public safety planning, coordination, and resources to ensure a safe and fun environment for all World Cup events in California. The legislation also would bolster efforts to combat human trafficking, which can increase around major international sporting events like the World Cup.

SACRAMENTO — Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel (D - San Fernando Valley), backed by a bipartisan coalition of 18 legislators from across California, introduced Assembly Bill (AB) 2058 to create a new $500 million Affordable Housing Preservation Tax Credit. This credit will enable California to preserve approximately 25,000 units of subsidized affordable housing that otherwise would be free to convert to market rate rents over the next five years.

Governor Newsom Signs Package of New Gun Laws from Legislature’s Gun Violence Prevention Working Group

SACRAMENTO — Today, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law a package of bills championed by the Legislature’s Gun Violence Prevention Working Group. The Working Group was organized earlier this year by Assemblymembers Jesse Gabriel (D-San Fernando Valley) and Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) and launched following a meeting with former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in February 2019. 

The signing ceremony was the culmination of a yearlong effort to advance innovative gun safety bills and create a national model for state gun violence prevention. Under the leadership of Assemblymembers Gabriel and Wicks, the Working Group welcomed Congresswoman Giffords to the State Capitol for a legislative roundtable, coordinated an ambitious legislative package, advocated for interstate coordination on gun safety measures, and represented California at the Giffords and March For Our Lives 2020 Presidential Gun Safety Forum in Nevada.
