Ramos Apprenticeship Bill Clears Committee

For immediate release:

(Sacramento, CA) – Assemblymember James C. Ramos (D – Highland) is proud to announce his bill to expand outreach and access for local apprenticeship programs has passed the Assembly Labor and Employment Committee.

“Although students are made aware of the potential benefits of apprenticeship programs, they are often unaware of what local programs are available and how to access them.  This bill will help bring these programs directly to the students. By both expanding the skilled workforce and providing apprentices competitive wages, the “earn as you learn” model has proven effective in providing access and opportunity to the job market for all workers,” said Assemblymember Ramos.

AB 1558 will require a school or local educational agency to contact local apprenticeship programs before holding a college or career fair, ensuring that student are made aware of and have access to local apprenticeship programs. This will ensure that apprenticeship programs are given the same forums to present opportunities to students as are other college or career options.

AB 1558 is supported by a wide range of organizations such as

  • Associated Builders and Contractors Northern California Chapter Training Trust Fund
  • California State Association of Electrical Workers
  • California State Pipe Trades Council
  • International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local 18
  • International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local 8
  • Western States Council Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation

AB 1558 will move on to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
