(Sacramento, CA) – Today, Assemblymember James C. Ramos’s (D – Highland) bill to expand age appropriate school district suicide prevention policies in kindergarten and grades 1-6 cleared the Senate Education Committee.
“As responsible adults, we must be sensitive to the difficulties young people face and provide assistance as they navigate childhood and adolescence. I’m proud to author this bill to bring age appropriate suicide prevention resources to parents and schools districts and offer help before tragedy occurs,” said Assemblymember Ramos.
AB 1767 will require schools to adopt a policy on suicide prevention in kindergarten and grades 1-6 that would be developed by school and community stakeholders, school-employed mental health professionals, and suicide prevention experts. Because of the wide range of ages represented, this policy is required to be age appropriate for each level of students.
AB 1767 now moves to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
