SACRAMENTO—Assemblymember James Ramos (D-Highland) announced today his vote in support of two COVID 19-related measures to provide emergency appropriations to deal with the crisis.
SB 89 authored by the Senate Committee on Budget and Fiscal Review amends the 2019-20 state budget to appropriate up to $500 million to meet the coronavirus emergency as well as funding of up to $1 billion more as needed.
SB 117, also introduced by the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review, allows schools, including charter schools, and districts to receive funding during the emergency. SB 117 also funds after school education and safety programs, supports payments for child care and development programs including California state preschool, general child care, CalWORKS childcare, and alternative payment programs. It provides $100 million in one-time Proposition 98 general fund for local educational agencies to support the cost of average daily attendance. These funds can be used to purchase personal protective equipment or for supplies and labor costs of cleaning school sites.
The Assembly also voted to go into a temporary legislative recess but will continue to work with the Governor in his efforts to meet the challenges of the crisis as exemplified by the budget action.
Upon passage of the bills, Ramos said:
These are difficult and in too many instances, tragic times for families and the state. The future is unknowable, but we are working to assist our constituents recover from this crisis. I urge all to follow advisory health and emergency measures so we can all move past the pandemic as quickly and safely as possible.
